FAQ

What is the Corporate Challenge?

A two-week Sport & Recreation event with a focus on participation, sportsmanship, team building and fun! The Games were created in 1992 to provide an activity for a handful of local businesses to foster employee interaction, teamwork, morale, pride, and health & wellness. The response proved overwhelming and today the Games have grown to include over 170 companies and over 18,000 athletes in an Olympics-style competition that is one of the largest amateur sporting events in Canada!

The Games take place over 16 days every spring.   Venues throughout the city host 22 sporting events as diverse as Orienteering and Eight Ball, Trivia and Golf.  There is an event for every level of fitness and desire.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Teams who have competed the previous year are given the first right of refusal to sign up.  The application process begins in Sept/Oct when the renewal packages are sent out.  Companies have until the beginning of November to confirm their participation. New companies can sign up by clicking on the New Company Application on the front page of our website.  We have room for 160 teams so it's a first come, first serve basis for entry!

The following are APPROXIMATE breakdowns of the divisions.

 TEAM SIZE AND COMPOSITION

In order to get the most enjoyment out of the Games, it is recommended that you have a minimum of 30 employees on your “Team”.  Over the years we have found that teams with less than this number have difficulty fielding teams in many of the sports as well as meeting their volunteer requirements.  Please note that if you are a small company wishing to participate, we encourage you to join together with another small company to form one “Team”.   You will be responsible for finding your partner team and coordinating your joint participation.  We will ask for just one main contact that will receive all of the information and correspondence.  Please call the office at 780-463-9500 if you have questions about this option.

 ELIGIBILITY

1.      All participants must be employed by the company at the time of the Games (full-time, part-time, contract --- as long as they meet all of the other eligibility requirements).

2.      Participants can only play for one company.

3.       All participants must be 18 years of age or older.

4.       The participating company must be based in the City of Edmonton, or one of the four surrounding counties – Sturgeon, Strathcona, Parkland or Leduc.  If there are participating employees working beyond these boundaries, a letter of exemption request must be submitted to the Games Manager.

In an effort to keep the cost of the Games reasonable, each participating company is required to supply volunteers to assist in the running of the Games.  Each company will be requested to provide volunteers for a specific event and it will become their responsibility to ensure that the volunteer needs for that event are met.  Companies will be required to provide volunteers based on the division they are in as follows (see Entry Fee your division):

  • Blue - 8
  • Green - 14
  • Yellow - 14
  • White - 16
  • Red - 16
If you do not provide at least the minimum number of volunteers, you will not be eligible to participate in the following year’s Games. Remember, volunteering is another way to get your employees involved in Corporate Challenge!
